Ocean City, Maryland: Seafood, Bay Views + Wild Ponies

Just got back from Ocean City, Maryland with my family. We went for a long weekend over the 4th of July and rented a condo on the beach.

While we had a blast spending time on the beach and seeing wild ponies on Assateague Island, I have to say – Ocean City isn’t the healthiest place.

We all know it can be tough to eat healthy on vacation, but I wanted to write this post to share some of the restaurants where we found healthier options (that weren’t just fried foods on the boardwalk and all-you-can-eat seafood buffets!)

We arrived Wednesday after driving from DC, which took about 3 hours (not bad for a quick escape to the beach!). We checked into our condo, the Capri, on the beachside in North Ocean City (near Fenwick Island, Deleware) and found a quick Mexican place to stop into before watching fireworks at a local park.

Thursday was beautiful weather so we spent most of the day on the beach. We stopped to pick up some fresh fruits and veggies at one of the many produce stands on the way, so that made for delicious beach snacks. Pro Tip: If you’re hoping to eat healthy on the beach, stop at a local produce stand for local, fresh food! I always love eating locally when I go to new places, but local restaurants don’t always have the freshest options, so this kills two birds with one stone.

For dinner, we ate at Catch 54 Fish House in Fenwick Island, thanks to a recommendation from a friend. It’s really nice and right on the bay, with beautiful sunset views! I had the salmon and it did not disappoint. We even made some friends with people from Philly while sitting at the bar, and chatted with them about our trip a few weeks ago.

The weather was a little cloudy on Friday, so we decided to explore Assateague Island which has a state park with wild horses! We were told we might have to take a boat through the bay channels to actually see the horses, but as soon as we entered we saw them all over – they came right up to the roads!

In the afternoon the weather started to turn to so we hopped back in the car to head home and in the blink of an eye, it started POURING rain. With the roads and sidewalks flooding, we decided to take cover at 45th Street Tap House Bar & Grill, where I was delighted to find they had a black bean + quinoa veggie burger with sweet potato tots! Beers were also much needed after our somewhat scary adventure getting home in the storm… thankfully there’s no documentation of Jake and I walking barefoot through knee-deep water in the restaurant parking lot!

It was pretty windy Saturday, so we started the day with a long beach walk, did some swimming in the pool, and had some nice downtime to read and nap (what are vacations for if not finishing books?). Once we mustered up the energy for dinner, we headed to the boardwalk for craft beers at Backshore Brewing Company (the blonde ale and tree hugger mini veggie burgers were delish). Then went to the south tip of the island to get our seafood on at Marina Deck. Jake and my mom opted for crab legs (when in Maryland…) and my dad and I got ahi tuna. All was delicious! Then we decided it was only right to finish the trip with ice cream, so we stopped at Do Do’s Ice Cream & Cookie Dough where I had the bananas foster – so good!

On Sunday we took a quick walk on the beach and headed home! Back to reality after a week of family, seafood, laughter, beach walks and naps. 🙂
